Bharatiya Janata Party wrests 5 bypoll seats

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Modi magic resurfaced in Gujarat with the BJP shocking the Congress by walking away with five of the seven Assembly seats to which byelections were held.

The byelection victories have boosted the BJP's morale as well as reinstated Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as the indisputable party satrap in Gujarat. Mr Modi has claimed this is a "trailer" of what is going to unfold in Maharashtra next month.

"We are not a party where one chief minister will claim credit for this. We are a party where lakhs of grassroots workers sweat it out and bring us this victory," Mr Modi said at a victory meet in Dehgam Monday night.

Obama wins, makes history

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

After making history by capturing the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama turns on Wednesday to unifying a fractured party for a five month battle for the White House against Republican John McCain.

Mr Obama rocketed from political obscurity to become the first black American to win the presidential nomination of a major US party. The Illinois senator on Tuesday locked up the 2,118 delegates he needs for victory at the August convention.

Rival Hillary Clinton, the former First Lady who entered the race 17 months ago as a heavy favourite, said she would consult party leaders and supporters about her next move.

Mr Obama will be crowned the Democratic nominee at the convention in August and faces Mr McCain in November to choose a successor to President George W. Bush.

King Katich Reigns Supreme

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

The Aussies have been in a league of their own in the on going Indian Premier League with unmatched power hitting and a great sense of occasion. Sunday was the turn of Simon Katich to come to the party.

Katich's blistering 52-ball 75 (11x4, 1x6) and Yuvraj's cameo (40, 29; 3x4, 2x6) propelled Kings XI to their second consecutive victory at home, thrashing Delhi Daredevils by four wickets at the PCA Stadium here on Sunday. Chasing Delhi's 158/8, the hosts replied with 162/6 thanks to the Aussie southpaw's assault. Katich, who came into the side as a last-minute replacement for James Hopes, was particularly severe on Mohammed Asif who gave away 32 runs in his four overs. He smashed three consecutive fours off the bowler in the fourth over as he raced to 50 in just 32 balls.

The skipper took charge after the Aussie's dismissal, ensuring the hosts did not have last minute problems during the chase handing the Daredevils, arguably the strongest contenders of the title, their first defeat of the tournament.
